Boat Accident Investigation
Litigation Support and Expert Investigations
Steve Knox has a unique combination of skills that make him an excellent witness. His engineering
education is well rounded; he is versed in several disciplines. Knox performs
about 150 damage surveys each year, so he sees what works in boats and
what causes problems.
Because he is active in several professional societies,
Knox has a broad range of contacts in the industry. His strongest attribute
as a witness, though, is his ability to explain technical subjects to
a non-technical audience. His technical writing demonstrates his wide
range of expertise and his ability to teach. Not only does Knox look good
on paper, he brings unique skills to investigations and appearances.
He investigates boating accidents of several types. His cases have included:
- Collisions
- Loss of control accidents, some with subsequent ejection

- Falls within a boat
- Yacht appraisals

-- divorce proceedings, third party claims, etc.
Owner's Representative
Steve Knox has represented
owners in new construction, acceptance inspection and trials, outfitting,
extensive structural repairs, refurbishment, and
maintenance surveys. Knox's experience with the standards of the American
Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) make him well qualified to verify that a
new boat is being constructed in accordance with the standards. He has
also inspected a complete line of boats for a builder to confirm standards
compliance and offer suggestions for improvement.
Damage Survey
Damage surveys are an important part of Knox Marine's business. They work for about fifteen different insurance companies to determine cause and origin, nature and extent of damage, and cost of repairs. Claims range from simple sterndrive damage resulting from striking a submerged object, to complex salvage and repair jobs that run into six figures. With offices in Richmond, Virginia and Norfolk, Virginia, the company’s surveyors are close to the major boating centers in Virginia and North Carolina.
